Acne

There are numerous acne treatments available on the market and many promise effective results, but fail to deliver. While topical remedies are often considered the first line of defense, severe cases may require cutting-edge technology for effective and lasting results. At PFRANKMD, we provide a number of advanced acne treatments in NYC at our locations on 5th Avenue in the Upper East Side and West Village, along with treatments for acne scarring, folliculitis, and enlarged pores.

What is Acne?

Acne occurs when there is an accumulation of oil, dirt, bacteria, or dead skin cells, known as sebum, that clogs your pores. A pimple, whitehead, or blackhead develops in the clogged pore and over time, can lead to cystic or nodular acne. Acne can lead to scarring or even hyperpigmentation. Teenagers and young adults may get acne at some point, but it can also occur in adulthood, resulting in pesky blemishes.

Am I a Good Candidate for Acne Treatments?

We provide a number of different acne treatments, so there is definitely one that’s suitable for your unique needs. Our team will determine the best treatment based on your specific case. The ideal candidate for laser acne treatments, such as AviClear, Aerolase, Laser Genesis, or Vbeam, you should not have any open lesions, infections, or skin cancer. If you have a history of keloid scarring, we may recommend a treatment in combination with lasers. Laser acne treatments can be safe for women who are pregnant, but we recommend discussing the treatment with your OB/GYN prior to scheduling your appointment.

Acne Treatment Consultations

At your consultation, we will determine the acne treatment that is right for you and your specific needs. The severity and type of acne will be considered when developing a tailored treatment plan. Additional tests may be requested to rule out other skin disorders and your medical history will be reviewed to assess any risk factors. Once our team recommends the best option for you, we will discuss the treatment, what to expect before, during, and after, and answer any questions you may have.

Our Acne Treatment Options

AviClear – This FDA-approved laser treatment targets overactive oil-producing, sebaceous glands, reducing face and body acne and lessening the severity of future breakouts. It also shrinks enlarged pores.

Aerolase – This state-of-the-art, non-ablative skin treatment uses high-energy laser pulses to destroy acne-causing bacteria and treat overactive oil glands and reduce active acne. Its laser energy also reduces the appearance of acne scars by stimulating collagen production.

Laser Genesis – This laser facial treatment is ideal for stimulating collagen production to help with frustrating acne scars.

Vbeam Prima – Vbeam Prima is a state-of-the-art treatment that uses laser energy to rejuvenate the skin, targeting acne scars for smooth skin.

Miria™ By AVAVA – Introducing the MIRIA™ skin tightening and resurfacing treatment. Experience the advanced skin rejuvenation benefits of MIRIA Skin Treatments with Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank at PFRANKMD in NYC.

Ellacor – This fractional micro-coring device removes tiny micro-cores of skin using hollow needles. As a result, the skin’s natural healing process is triggered, clearing away acne scars and tightening the skin.

Vivace RF Microneedling – Vivace RF microneedling treatments create microchannels on the skin. As channels are created, radiofrequency energy is delivered to the treatment area. This encourages reduction of the targeted acne scars and enlarged pores.

Cryotherapy – By delivering pressurized cryogenic air to the targeted areas, this treatment reduces redness and inflammation to treat inflamed, active acne. It can also shrink oversized pores.

Clear + Brilliant – Clear and Brilliant is a skin-resurfacing laser treatment that helps stimulate the production of collagen and speed up the skin’s regeneration rate, healing enlarged pores and acne scars.

Topical and Oral Antibiotics – Folliculitis and certain types of acne can be treated with antibiotics to reduce acne and redness and treat infected hair follicles.

TCA CROSS – TCA CROSS stands for Clinical Reconstruction of Skin Scars. The treatment uses trichloroacetic acid to reduce oversized pores.

Acne Treatment Aftercare

Every acne treatment has a different recovery process. The majority of acne treatments don’t require any recovery or downtime. You are able to get back to work immediately or resume your daily routine right away. There may be slight swelling or redness, but these should resolve quickly. Stay away from prolonged sun exposure, tanning beds, and topical applications that may irritate the skin. You may be required to come back for additional sessions to maximize the treatment’s efficacy.

The cost of acne treatments in New York City will be discussed during the consultation. Factors such as type of treatment, how many sessions the treatment will take, size and number of treatment areas, and severity of the issues being treated can impact the overall price.

The biggest mistake I see? Waiting too long.

Scars heal best when they’re treated early. Addressing a C-section scar in the initial healing phase helps reduce inflammation, prevent excess scar tissue, and minimize how visible the scar becomes long-term.

Here, I’m using pulsed dye laser therapy to target a C-section scar while it’s still red and inflamed. This treatment calms excess blood vessels in the scar, helping reduce redness and lower the risk of keloid or hypertrophic scar formation.

In most cases, treatment can begin six to eight weeks after delivery, once your OB/GYN gives clearance. In select cases, it may start as early as four weeks. Timing matters. A red, active scar is far more responsive to treatment than a scar that’s been left to mature unchecked.

As I say, “The sooner you clean up your room, the less dirty it gets over time, and the less work you have to do to remove it.”

Treatments are typically performed monthly until the scar is flat, calm, and barely noticeable.

Stretch marks and skin laxity often develop as a result of pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or the natural aging process. At PFRANKMD, we combine the Vbeam laser and Miria laser to effectively address both concerns.

Miria uses advanced non-ablative laser technology to heat the deeper layers of the skin, improving elasticity and firmness by stimulating new collagen and elastin production.

Vbeam targets redness and discoloration in stretch marks by reducing vascular inflammation and stimulating collagen remodeling for a more even skin tone.

Together, these treatments work synergistically to reduce the appearance of stretch marks and restore smoother, tighter, and more youthful-looking skin with minimal downtime.

When considering laser treatments for scars following various surgical procedures like facelifts, liposuction, and breast augmentation, it’s important to understand the timing for initiation. Patients can start laser treatments as early as 2 to 6 weeks post-surgery.

This timing is contingent upon several factors, including the complete closure of the surgical wound and the removal of stitches. Once these conditions are met, laser therapy can be beneficial in minimizing the appearance of scars and enhancing the overall healing process. Early intervention with laser treatments can promote skin regeneration and reduce the risk of abnormal scarring, leading to improved aesthetic outcomes. It’s essential to consult with a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon to tailor a post-operative care plan that includes the appropriate timing and type of laser treatment based on individual healing and skin types.

@dr.connieyang breaks down two of our most effective options for acne scarring. The CO2 laser is the gold standard for deeper collagen remodeling and more dramatic textural improvement, though it comes with a longer recovery. Miria is a novel non-ablative laser that offers controlled resurfacing with less aggressiveness and shorter downtime.

Both options can be transformative when used thoughtfully and in expert hands. At PFRANKMD, our goal is always to match the right device to the right patient for the safest, most effective pro-aging outcome.
