Teeth and Jaw

Neuromodulators are well-known for their use in treating dynamic wrinkles. These injectables include Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport. Here at PFRANKMD™, Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank has developed a special technique to inject neuromodulators, known as ENSO. This stands for Expressive Neuromodulation and Structural Optimization. When injected correctly, Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport can be used to treat many different conditions, including teeth grinding and clenching, TMJ, and wide face shape. If you suffer from one of these conditions, or if you are looking for a minimally invasive way to slim your face, your provider at PFRANKMD by Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank can discuss your specific needs at your initial consultation.

What are Neuromodulators?

In the aesthetic and wellness world, neuromodulators are known by the names Botox, Xeomin, and Dysport. But what do neuromodulators do? These injectables are able to weaken the signal that is transmitted between neurons, which is another way of saying the muscles are relaxed. The neuromodulators we offer have a temporary effect, so there’s no need to worry about permanent results.

Dr. Frank Discusses Various Treatments for Teeth Grinding

Teeth Grinding and Clenching

Also known as bruxism, this condition where an individual grinds and clenches the teeth can cause serious damage over time. There are steps you can take to stop this habit while you are awake, but many people who experience bruxism do it while they are asleep. Teeth grinding and clenching is caused by a few muscles in the jaw contracting over and over. When a neuromodulator is injected into these muscles, the grinding can stop. This can keep you from causing damage to your teeth and jaw over time, and it can also relieve the immediate pain that is caused by bruxism.

TMJ

TMJ, which stands for temporomandibular joint, can be caused by a few different medical conditions. It causes pain in the jaw, and it can even cause headaches and ear pain, and it can make it difficult to open the jaw. Neuromodulators can be used to reduce this pain, and if TMJ is caused by acetylcholine (which causes atrophy), then a neuromodulator can treat this as well. For individuals who are experiencing lockjaw due to TMJ, neuromodulators are effective at relaxing the jaw to some extent. This is an invaluable treatment considering we all use our temporomandibular joint while talking, eating, and swallowing, so it becomes impossible to avoid the pain without the use of neuromodulators.

Facial Slimming

Neuromodulators can be used to achieve a slimmer facial appearance when injected into the correct muscle. Dr. Frank employs the ENSO technique to target specific muscles in the face. Once these muscles have been injected with Botox, Xeomin, or Dysport, the muscles will relax. In their relaxed state, they will experience a certain level of atrophy. This is sometimes known as non-surgical jaw reduction, as the muscles that are targeted are around the jaw. This treatment will not interfere in any way with a patient’s ability to speak, eat, swallow, or do anything else they are accustomed to doing.

Achieving the best possible outcome from facial plastic surgery extends far beyond the operating room. Post-surgical care plays a critical role in supporting healing, enhancing results, and maintaining facial harmony over time. Immediate postoperative management focuses on controlling swelling and bruising through modalities such as lymphatic drainage, cold compresses, and, when appropriate, vascular laser treatments like VBeam. These therapies can minimize inflammation, reduce discoloration, and accelerate visible recovery.

Ensuring that incisions heal cleanly and without complications is also essential. This involves proper wound care, scar prevention strategies, and sometimes the early use of treatments like silicone gels or light-based therapy to minimize scar visibility. Neuromodulators (such as Botox or Dysport) may also be used in the early healing stages to reduce tension on healing incisions and prevent the formation of dynamic wrinkles.

As healing progresses, the focus shifts toward refinement and long-term maintenance. Cosmetic injectables—including hyaluronic acid fillers, biostimulatory agents like Sculptra, and neuromodulators—can help restore volume, smooth fine lines, and enhance surgical outcomes without the need for further invasive procedures. These treatments are especially effective in maintaining youthful contours and prolonging the benefits of surgery.

Ultimately, collaboration between a skilled facial plastic surgeon and an experienced cosmetic dermatologist ensures a 360-degree approach to rejuvenation. By combining surgical precision with advanced aesthetic maintenance, patients can enjoy natural-looking, long-lasting results that evolve beautifully over time.

In this clip from The Pro-Aging Podcast, Dr. Frank reflects on how his early interest in psychiatry never truly left him.

He shares how a psychology background helps him support patients beyond the medical side, especially those dealing with visible skin concerns. Dermatology, he explains, is a field built on connection, trust, and understanding the emotional impact of appearance and wellness.

As he jokes with Dr. Yang
“Our appointments are therapy sessions. Botox works better than Prozac anyway.”

🎙️ A reminder that great dermatology treats the whole person, not just the skin.

I discuss a patient case that highlights the importance of taking a comprehensive approach when using neuromodulators like Botox. Treating only the forehead can lead to unintended brow heaviness, particularly in patients who have undergone procedures such as a brow lift.

Options for minimizing potential side effects associated with neuromodulator injections (Botox) include exploring alternative formulations, as well as pre-medication protocols using antihistamines or anti-inflammatory medications. While these treatments are well-tolerated, understanding how to minimize potential side effects and manage neuromodulator resistance is key to maintaining long-term results. Common, temporary reactions may include mild headaches, bruising, swelling, or localized tenderness.

Through a comprehensive consultation, your provider can develop a customized pre-treatment assessment to identify contraindications and establish a post-treatment care plan to reduce adverse effects. For patients experiencing neuromodulator resistance or diminished results over time, adjusting formulations, dosage, or treatment intervals may help maintain effectiveness.

Working with an experienced medical provider ensures safe, individualized care and optimal long-term results.

In the evolving landscape of cosmetic procedures, finding a harmonious balance between non-invasive treatments and surgical interventions is crucial for achieving optimal aesthetic results. Patients often seek surgical options, such as facelifts or liposuction, for dramatic transformations; however, it is essential to recognize that these results can be complemented by ongoing non-invasive treatments.

Procedures like Botox, dermal fillers, and laser therapies play a vital role in maintaining the youthful appearance achieved through surgery. Botox can effectively reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by temporarily relaxing the muscles, while fillers restore volume and enhance facial contours, contributing to a refreshed look. Laser therapies can improve skin texture, tone, and elasticity, ensuring that the skin continues to look vibrant post-surgery.

It is important for patients to understand that surgical results may change over time due to natural aging processes and factors such as sun exposure and lifestyle choices.

Therefore, a commitment to regular maintenance treatments can significantly prolong and enhance the longevity of surgical outcomes. Collaborating closely with a qualified medical practitioner can help tailor an ongoing treatment plan that aligns with individual aesthetic goals, ensuring that both non-invasive and surgical options work synergistically for the best possible results.

Lip filler migration can occur for a variety of reasons—most often from overfilling, improper injection technique, or the natural shape and movement of your lips. For patients with a thinner upper lip, we often recommend combining filler with a Botox lip flip. This technique relaxes the muscle around the mouth so the upper lip gently rolls upward, creating a lifted look and more visible lip surface. When used alongside filler, Botox can add support, improve balance, and enhance shape—allowing for a fuller appearance with less filler, which helps reduce the risk of migration.

The key? Choose an injector who shares your aesthetic vision, understands facial harmony, and prioritizes natural, balanced results.
