How Does Fraxel Repair Work?
Fraxel Repair works by delivering penetrating micro beams of thermal laser energy and blasts of carbon dioxide (CO2) through a handheld device applied to the treatment area. The combination vaporizes a fraction of the skin’s surface layer and creates tiny micro-columns of injury that increase collagen and elastin production. As the skin surface heals, damaged and dormant skin cells shed away and are replaced with healthy ones.
Is Fraxel Repair for All Types of Acne Scars?
Yes, Fraxel Repair is FDA-approved for the treatment of all types of acne scars. By resurfacing top layers to soften edges and collagen remodeling below the surface to raise depressions, Fraxel Repair can significantly improve:
Icepick Scars – Small, deep, and narrow scars that resemble tiny puncture marks. These often appear in clusters.
Boxcar Scars –Wider than icepick scars with moderate depressions with defined edges around the surface.
Rolling Scars –Broad, shallow depressions with a rolling or undulating texture.
Hypertrophic and Keloid Scars – These scars result from an overproduction of collagen during the wound healing process, leading to raised, thickened areas of skin. They typically occur in response to more severe acne lesions.
The Fraxel Repair Procedure
Fraxel Repair is performed under local anesthesia to ensure patient comfort. Dr. Frank meticulously targets different treatment areas, adjusting the levels of intensity as needed throughout the procedure. The fractional technology targets specific zones of the skin while leaving surrounding tissue intact. Patients may experience a warming sensation during the procedure, but it is generally well-tolerated.
Recovery and Results
The downtime after Fraxel Repair can vary, on average though you can expect redness, swelling, and a sunburn-like sensation immediately following the procedure. The treated areas will peel and form small crusts that should be left alone. Most patients feel comfortable returning to activities after a week, but it may take several weeks for the redness to fully fade and skin to reveal an improved texture and healthy glow.
During the recovery, makeup can be used to conceal redness, but gentle, hypoallergenic products are advisable. Sun protection is crucial as treated skin is sensitive to UV radiation. For optimal results with Fraxel Repair, more than one session may be necessary.

Age is just a number, but fine lines and crepey skin don’t have to be a part of it! Our 65-year-old patient was frustrated with the fine lines around her mouth and the crepey skin around her eyes and neck. Although she had already undergone a facelift and had received neuromodulators and fillers, she still wasn’t completely satisfied with her overall complexion. Therefore, she has decided to try the Fraxel Re:pair fractional CO2 laser resurfacing treatment to achieve new skin. During the treatment, we will focus on the areas around her mouth and the fine lines around her eyes, which will yield results that surgical intervention cannot achieve.
