HyperpigmentationHyperpigmentation, or increased pigmentation, may be caused by sun damage or after skin injury, what is called Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). PIH can be a result of several conditions including burns, acne, Melasma, allergic reactions, skin disease, and trauma. People with darker Asian, Mediterranean or African skin tones are also more prone to hyperpigmentation, especially if they have excess sun exposure. Hyperpigmentation comes from an excess production of melanin. Melanocytes are found at the lower layer of the epidermis. Treatment of hyperpigmentation may include topical hydroquinone, kojic acid, fruit acids, azelaic acid, tretinoin, and antioxidants. Treatment must be coordinated with strict sun avoidance- see pfrankmd skincare. Laser treatments can be very effective. Treatment options will depend on the severity and quality of the hyperpigmentation in addition the patient’s skin type. Dr Frank uses several devices including Medlite laser for age spots, Medlite Laser Toning, Photofacials, Fraxel Restore, and Fraxel Dual/Thulium.
