Acne Lasers
Multiple devices are on the market to treat acne. In general they are used for individuals who don’t respond or cannot tolerate the other medical options available. Often they are used in addition to medical treatments as well. Prior to lasers, chemical peels and microdermabrasion were often implemented with facials.
There are wavelengths of light in the blue range that is specific to the destruction of p. acnes, the bacterial culprit in acne. The ClearLight™ laser was the first in its class to be used for acne. It had modest results after many treatments. Other lasers are thought to heat up the skin, stunning oil glands and killing bacteria. The SmoothBeam and the Medlite® are examples of such devices and work well with several treatments. Most recently, Photodynamic therapy using the Vbeam®, Blue light or IPL, has proven to be very effective for cystic acne. The other advantage is that results can generally be obtained with only 2-3 treatments in contrast to other technologies. This technology was traditionally used for severe sun damage and skin cancers. For comedonal (black head/white head acne) acne, the Isolaz™ device helps to empty and stun overactive pores. Using the new Profusion technology we are then able to infuse specific medicines deep into the pore to improve efficacy.
